프랑스 파리에서 대학을 다니고 있는 셀린(줄리 델피)은 부다페스트에서 할머니를 만난 후 열차를 타고 파리로 돌아가는 길이다. 바로 뒷자리 독일인 부부의 다툼 소리를 피해 빈자리를 찾아 자리를 옮긴다.
옮긴 자리에서 제시(에단 호크)라는 미국인 남자와 이야기를 나누게 된다.
제시의 제안으로 기차에서 함께 내려 비엔나 곳곳을 함께 여행하며 하루의 시간을 함께 보낸다.
그들은 해가 뜨고 아침이 밝았을 때 어떤 길을 걷게 될것인가?

CELINE suddenly gets up, grabs her bag, and starts looking for another seat.
A few rows back, she finds a seat across the aisle from JESSE.
Before sitting down, they make brief eye contact and kind of shake their heads and smile at the tension.
Just as she settles in and goes back to her book, the wife gets up and storms down the aisle.
JESSE and CELINE follow her with their eyes, and as she passes them they find they are looking right at each other.
He makes a funny "uh-oh" face.
